甚至 marks a climb towards the extreme: after a first item, you add an even more surprising case, "even", "to the point of".
It can link two elements (A，甚至 B) or work as an adverb before the verb. It often combines with 连…也/都… for emphasis: 甚至连…都….
Examples
这个问题很简单，小学生甚至都会回答。
Zhège wèntí hěn jiǎndān, xiǎoxuéshēng shènzhì dōu huì huídá.This question is simple; even a primary schoolkid could answer it.

Common mistakes
✗ Using 甚至 for a weaker item: ✗ 他会说法语，甚至会说你好。 → what follows 甚至 must be the most surprising.
✗ 甚至连他不知道 → 连 needs 也/都: ✓ 甚至连他也不知道。
