甚至 (shènzhì) means "even, so much so that". It introduces the most extreme or surprising item in a series: "many people…, even children…".
It goes before a verb, a noun phrase or a clause. It often combines with 都 / 也: 他甚至连饭都忘了吃 (he even forgot to eat).
It fits nicely after 不但……而且: 不但A,而且B,甚至C.
Examples
这里的冬天很冷,甚至会到零下三十度。
Zhèlǐ de dōngtiān hěn lěng, shènzhì huì dào língxià sānshí dù.Winters here are very cold: it can even hit minus thirty.
很多人,甚至孩子,都知道垃圾分类。
Hěn duō rén, shènzhì háizi, dōu zhīdào lājī fēnlèi.Many people, even children, know how to sort their rubbish.
他忙得甚至没时间喝水。
Tā máng de shènzhì méi shíjiān hē shuǐ.He's so busy he doesn't even have time to drink water.
Common mistakes
✗ Putting 甚至 on the first item: it introduces the last, strongest item.
✗ 他甚至很累。 → you need a clear build-up first. ✓ 他很累,甚至站不起来了。
