把 with negation and modal verbs

Subject + 没 / 不 / 别 / 要 / 应该 / 能 + 把 + Object + Verb + …
In a 把 sentence, negation (没, 不, 别) and modal verbs (要, 能, 应该, 想, 得) go before 把, never before the main verb.
- 我没把作业写完。
- 你别把盐放太多。
- 你应该把肉先洗一下。
Time adverbs such as 已经, 马上, 一定 also go before 把: 我已经把菜做好了。
Examples
别把油放得太多。
Bié bǎ yóu fàng de tài duō.Don't put in too much oil.
我还没把菜洗完呢。
Wǒ hái méi bǎ cài xǐwán ne.I haven't finished washing the vegetables yet.
你得把火关小一点儿。
Nǐ děi bǎ huǒ guān xiǎo yìdiǎnr.You need to turn the heat down a bit.
我一定要把这个菜学会。
Wǒ yídìng yào bǎ zhège cài xuéhuì.I'm determined to learn how to make this dish.
Common mistakes
✗ 我把作业没写完。 → ✓ 我没把作业写完。
✗ 你把盐别放。 → ✓ 你别把盐放进去。
✗ 我把菜要做好。 → ✓ 我要把菜做好。
