不得不 / 非…不可: to have no choice but

Two double negatives expressing obligation:
• 不得不 ("cannot not") = being forced by circumstances, often reluctantly: "have no choice but to".
• 非…不可 ("unless…, impossible") = absolute necessity or strong determination: "must", "insist on".
Nuance: 不得不 = you put up with it; 非…不可 = it's essential or you insist.
Examples
公司突然有急事,我不得不取消休假。
Gōngsī tūrán yǒu jí shì, wǒ bù dé bù qǔxiāo xiūjià.Something urgent came up at work and I had to cancel my leave.
这个会很重要,你非参加不可。
Zhège huì hěn zhòngyào, nǐ fēi cānjiā bùkě.This meeting is crucial; you absolutely must attend.
他病得很重,非住院不可。
Tā bìng de hěn zhòng, fēi zhùyuàn bùkě.He's seriously ill and has to be hospitalised.
Common mistakes
✗ 我不得不喜欢这个电影 → 不得不 = external constraint, not a feeling.
✗ Dropping 不可: in speech 非去 alone occurs, but learn the full ✓ 非去不可 first.
✗ 不得不 ≠ 不必 (needn't).
