通过 + means/method，S + V (result)
As a preposition, 通过 marks the means or process that leads to a result: "through", "by", "via". It goes at the start of the sentence or right before the verb.
通过 is also a verb: "to pass through" (通过马路) or "to pass, be adopted" (通过考试). Context tells them apart.
Examples
通过这次实验，我们证明了这个观点。
Tōngguò zhè cì shíyàn, wǒmen zhèngmíng le zhège guāndiǎn.Through this experiment, we proved this view.
他是通过朋友介绍认识她的。
Tā shì tōngguò péngyou jièshào rènshi tā de.He met her through a friend.
通过努力，她终于通过了考试。
Tōngguò nǔlì, tā zhōngyú tōngguò le kǎoshì.Through hard work, she finally passed the exam.
Common mistakes
✗ 我通过坐地铁去公司。 → for transport just say ✓ 我坐地铁去公司。通过 = method/process.
✗ Tacking it on at the end: ✗ 我成功了通过努力。→ ✓ 通过努力，我成功了。
